Automatic guilt

Photobucket

I received a call this afternoon, while driving to ECP for training. What the caller had to say disturbed me a little, and I couldn't keep my eyes on the road because I was far too busy feeling guilty about some issues. Filtered my way out of the outermost lane, and continued to listen to the caller and feel guilty at the same time. Oh, and I thought about what it'd be like too if I were to get into a crash there and then.

Truth be told, I saw no reason for me to be feeling guilty since I wasn't exactly involved in deciding how things were supposed to end up. I've always believed that everyone has the power to choose and prioritize what's important in their lives; and since you decided that this was not your priority not too long ago, we can't really be blamed for wanting the best for everyone, right?

I hate it when I start feeling guilty because of what people say even when I've not done anything wrong, and I realized, that happens whenever people start painting pitiful stories (be it real or not) that by no means, are results of my doing. The best solution I can think of to deal with this in future, if it's ever going to happen again, is to appear sympathetic but, think to myself "Thank you for your story" to whoever that tries to send me on guilt trips again.

Don't be like me. Stop guilt-tripping today!

ps. yf found the source of the never-ending line of ants that have been crawling about my room for the longest time ever; their 'nest', or whatever you call it, is in one of the cracks found my bedroom door.

Sometimes, there are no Whys

In contrast to what people say about things happening for a reason, sometimes, there's just no use in questioning certain issues, because you will not derive any answer. The next best thing you can do is just to accept people or things the way they are.

Of course, you don't do this all the time. It becomes an excuse.

the Big Bali Break (BBB)

Now chewren, I know it's been way over a month now that I'm back from the land of awesome and cheap Bintangs, and most of you are probably miserably drowning in your notes/work... so, here's something to cheer you up!

Photobucket

After my 6-day solo stint in Bali and Lombok (mainly), I flew back to Bali to meet G and Bun. They made a super spontaneous decision to come to Bali (while we were studying for exams), and I'm so glad they came! It would definitely not have been as fun without the two of you.

Photobucket

After my 20-minute flight from Mataram Airport (Lombok) to Denpasar Airport (Bali), I walked out of the airport to flag a Blue Bird taxi. I learnt that Blue Birds can only pick up passengers from outside the airport, as only 'airport taxis' (also blue in colour) can pick up passengers from within the airport compound. 'Airport Taxis' operate on a fixed rate basis; so you guys will have to agree on a price before the driver moves off, while Blue Birds are metered. Just to give you a rough idea, I paid 60,000Rp (~S$10) for a 15-minute ride on the airport taxi to Kuta Beach and only 25,000Rp (~S$4) for a Blue Bird from Kuta to the airport. That price difference sort of set the tone for me on which taxis to flag down for the rest of the trip.

Where we stayed

PhotobucketPhotobucket

We stayed at Mecure Roxy; located directly along the beach front on Jalan Pantai; two doors away from Hard Rock Hotel. The room's bill came up to about a hundred odd per night. Room was pretty clean, sheets and toiletries were changed daily, and they had most of the channels you can think of on cable tv. I slept really well in our room; and there were mornings where G would tell me I'd been dreaming that I was scuba-diving in the night while sleeping beside her because I was breathing really deeply. Our hotel had a lovely infinity pool; one that overlooked the beach-front, a place where guys picked up girls, cocktails were served and a place where you could just take a nice, cool dip; a nice respite from the duper hot weather.

What we ate

entrance of Ibu Oka

On our second day, we rented a car (driver inclusive) from Mecure to explore some corners of Bali. We paid a total of S$60 for a really old Suzuki model, and our driver, Putu. Fuel charges were not included; so you'll have to pay to top up the fuel tank along the way. We set out of Ubud, for lunch. I was so damned eager to try the famed Babi Guling (Ibu Oka) that Bourdain's been such a fan of on his show.

Photobucket

We were on the road for nearly an hour and a half with nearly empty stomachs; stocked up on some tidbits and we tried pink Pringles for the first time. There was nothing really special about it; give me BBQ/Sour Cream Pringles anytime.

Photobucket

We arrived at Ubud finally, and had Putu drop us just across the road from where Ibu Oka was. There were not as many tourists around as there were back at Kuta, less touts, and that made it a little easier to get around. Anyway, you can sit at any empty table you can find in Ibu Oka, and then ask for the menus from the servers and place your orders.

Photobucket
the yummy food's here.

I was prepared to be disappointed since there might have been the possibility that it's highly over-rated, but I'm really glad I wasn't. Not about what I came there for anyway. I loved the roasted, cackly skin with the thin layer of fats underneath and I loved the tender and well-spiced pork. Can't remember exactly how much it was, but I'm guessing it was around S$3-$4. Didn't really care much bout the vegetables and gizzards that came with the set though. I'm going to order just the skin & pork combination the next time I visit!

Photobucket
a lunch-satisfied Chang.

Following our delicious lunch at Ubud, we headed down to Ku De Ta (along Seminyak) in the evening for dinner and some drinks. Ku De Ta's like the bestest beach restaurant that I've been to; the ambiance was great, the view was good, service was great, the people are beautiful and the food and drinks were yummy too (though a little pricey). Would be damned romantic to visit the place with your special partners; and I had two with me (am I lucky or what).

Photobucket

We ordered some pizzas, a little finger-food, cocktails... and looked at the beautiful post-sunset sky (missed it by 20 minutes, pity!) while waiting for our orders to be served. I really liked the pizzas, and even though it's not exactly cheap, they have this 2-for-1 sort of promotion going on.

Photobucket

In between camwhore-shots like these, we played finger drinking games. G taught us a few games and we started ruining the nice ambiance by shouting really loud, not that anyone really minded. Everyone was just in a happy mood while they were there.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

This is totally random, but, the individual toilet cubicles there are sound-proof! The three of us got into 3 different cubicles and it became super quiet all of a sudden. I started talking to the two of them but there was no reply from either one of them. When we all came out from our cubicles, only did we realize that we'd all been trying to talk to one another but the cubicles were soundproof. You can do super big business in there and no one will hear you, how considerate!

Photobucket
pretty lights at the entrance of Ku De Ta.

On another day, the girls got to know this local guy, Chris, working at the surf school we went for our lesson at. He drove us down to Jimbaran Beach for a big seafood feast. There was so much food on our table; we had deep-fried calamari, grilled snapper, kang kong, prawns and 2 big lobsters. Most expensive meal of our trip.

Photobucket
all the yum.

michelle, you okay? :p

We started the "michelle, you okay?" joke that night, after Chris told her she looked like his ex-girlfriend and kept checking on her while giving her a ride back to our hotel. lol.

Photobucket

When we were not busy feasting, we had simple food like Nasi Campur (pictured). I had a great deal of Mee Goreng during my entire stay (really like that it was loaded with MSG and cheap), and G was really unlucky to have a worm in hers at breakfast on our last day there.

What we saw

You can find all sorts of colours and shapes on Bali. The people dress in all kinds of different colours, there are religious processions going on every now and then; most of the people here are devout Hindus who would visit the temples on a daily basis. You can find no deck-chairs on Kuta Beach because it's reserved for such ceremonies; deck-chairs start appearing on the Legian Beach area.

teggal lalang

Teggal Lalang. I think we were brought to the wrong place leh; I looked at my friend's pictures of supposedly Teggal Lalang as well, and they look vastly different. This picture's just reminded me of the super nerve-wrecking ride we had to get here. I thought we were going to drop off the cliff and die.
Photobucket

Bottle-openers shaped in the form of penises -_- There were lots of them everywhere, especially at the Ubud Market we went to for some shopping. Sure to raise some brows in conservative Singapore; but I don't remember reading anything about them having anything to do with fertility as well. Guess it's just a novelty product, should've bought one back to tease Mumsy with.

Surfing!

We signed up for a US$30/pax lesson with Odyssey Surf School that was located just at the door-step of Mecure's entrance. As with all other kinds of courses, we were first introduced to the basic concepts of standing up on a surfboard, how to move the surfboard safely and effectively when in the water, etc etc.

Photobucket
Warming up. Don't ask why I looked like that, I have zero idea.

Standing up was presented to us as something really easy to do. There were only 3 steps involved.

Photobucket
1. Push off, Push-up position
Photobucket
2. Back leg up

Photobucket
and finally, 3) front leg forward.

Looks deceptively easy, but it wasn't exactly THAT easy. Look at how I fell funny.

Though I'd have to say, I did a pretty good job for beginners :p
(just joking G! stop making me feel paiseh leh)

Photobucket

Windsurfing at PA's probably the reason why I managed a teeny bit better.... ... ... ..

Photobucket

or not. I sprained my left foot while beaching, and my last 2 days in Bali was spent limping around. Ta ma de.

Last story to share about Bali. I realized that the girls and me were going back on different flights; they were leaving at 1 p.m. and me, 5 p.m only after they arrived. I spent 3 hours waiting at the airport for check-in, alone with only Kite Runner to read, my sprained foot and a duper big backpack to lug around.

Photobucket
Right. That's it!

ps. I realized we haven't been to the really touristy places around Bali, say, Tanah Lot, Uluwatu, and temples like such. I want to head back sometime soon!

i'm drowning

but I'm drowning happily in the shitload of readings that has to be done each week. Sometimes, they can totally put me to sleep by the 2nd page that I've flipped, and yet sometimes, I can follow whatever they're talking about all the way to the last page. I guess this is what you call a love-hate relationship.

Happy TuTu!

Photobucket

Dear Jenny/Gedine/GB/Geraldine,

Happy twenty-two! Thank you for being such a nice roomie who brought and cooked Nong Shim, while all I did was just eat Nong Shim. Looking forward to eating more Nong Shim cooked by you. Thank you for all the joy and laughter (that includes laughing at me) that you've brought into our room and my life.

ps.hope you enjoyed the yummy macaroons! :p

Love always, aj

I helped to celebrate a friend's birthday for the first time in my NTU hall life today.
Stalling for time was really difficult; I simply didn't know what excuses to use most of the time, I think I'm just really bad at lying when I have to do it consciously. Bah.

Have you ever...

Photobucket

Read about blog entries (or seen photographs taken, or heard about snippets) of places that people have been to, and all that they talk about or show make their trips seem really boring? Or put it in a less judgmental manner; they were just totally not interested or happy to be at the place where they were. Do such entries/photographs/anecdotes make you not want to visit that place (like they do for me)?

SIM Windsurfing Championship 2010

It was two exciting days of racing for the few of us from NTU who took part. Everyone had such high expectations for the event but great expectations usually lead to disappointments, and that was exactly what happened. It's really easy to whine about how many things could have been improved, but then again, it must really not be easy for the guys from SIM to be coordinating such a large-scale event. Hence, I really want to say a heartfelt thank you to them for the successful organization of SIMWC.

Photobucket
david, tits

It was the first time where I did not screw up as badly for my races as I used to, where I stopped panicking badly and actually had more or less an idea what to do, and the first time I've ever gotten a medal (finished in 2nd place) for windsurfing. There were 3 girls in my category (so I'd get 3rd at worst), two of which are from SIM. While I did quite well for the races on the first day, I got complacent and got my ass whooped on the second. It was definitely a good experience though, finally having won something and not being at the back of the pack. I'm looking forward to more racing before I graduate in two years' time!

Photobucket
shiqi, kayyong - 4metres!

If either one of you two are reading this, I just want to say to you, DON'T GIVE UP! It's only your first races (and there's definitely more to come), so you'll need a lot more of experience before you guys can finally get something out of it. I can totally relate to how you guys are feeling, since I did just as badly in the past and it's not exactly the nicest feeling. Don't be demoralized, stay in the game, train hard, and the hard work will pay off.

Photobucket
yinghui - can't wait to see her surf!

And I've not mentioned how much I appreciate the help of all the (NTU) helpers who came down and helped out, one way or another. Yinghui's always giving us advice on the right courses to take, starts, just about anything we can think of and I'm so thankful she's there to give us so much guidance.

all of us!

ITWC in about less than a month's time. I hope we will all race well!

First visit to Jason's Bay

Hopped onto Rodin's car last Friday with Mingle and Gerald, and we made our way to Jason's Bay (somewhere in/near Kota Tinggi in Malaysia).

Photobucket
attracted a fair bit of attention at the customs

Photobucket

I've been hearing stories about the place from the senior windsurfers; stories about big, tall waves, honking winds, how the surfers would need to walk a kilometre down the beach should they get drifted too far off, and so on. Now's finally my chance to take a look at the place myself.

Photobucket
pretty patterns in the sand

After our hearty Ba Kut Teh lunch, it started pouring heavily along the way to Jason's Bay. It didn't stop even after we arrived, and the guys were even thinking of moving to another location, Palau (or Pulau, can't remember) if the rain wouldn't stop.

Photobucket
some more pretty sand patterns

Thankfully, the rain stopped a hour or so later. The wind started blowing constantly and the guys were more than ready to rig up and start sailing.

I was the photographer for the day since I decided that I wasn't ready to surf anywhere else other than Singapore waters.

Photobucket
R's 94Litre.

The shore extends for about a hundred metres into the water, so it was really shallow up till quite far out. The waves, however, were much bigger than what we usually get back at ECP and water conditions were moderately choppy with few white caps. The wind was blowing a constant 10-15 knots; in between gusts, the guys became happy windsurfers.

Photobucket

I hope by the next visit to Jason's Bay (probably end 2010), I'd be ready to ride the waves and harness the wind! G asked if I wanted to try windsurfing when he thought I was really bored taking pictures on the shore, and I was so tempted to... but I remembered SIM Open's the next day and I really don't want to have any aching muscles before the races start.

Photobucket

Dropped by some Crab King place back in Johor, and we had some butter-cream crabs (奶油蟹), deep fried calamari coated with salted egg-yolk, sambal lalas and some seafood tofu. It was quite a hit-&-miss dinner; I really liked the calamari and lalas, felt that butter-cream crabs could've been a little better and the tofu was just, ordinary.
